Official: It’s Google Panda Update 23, Impacting ~1.3% Of Queries

Google has confirmed rumors of a Google update announcing on Twitter that they pushed out a Panda data refresh today impacting about 1.3% of English queries.      

This would make for the 23rd Panda update since the first Panda algorithm was introduced on February 24, 2011. Since then we had 22 updates both to the algorithm and also to the index or data refreshes.

The latest impacted 1.3% of the queries, whereas version 22 impacted only 0.8% of English queries.

We did see signs of a major update a week ago but Google told us there was no such update. Then again, I reported early signs of another update at the Search Engine Roundtable and Google confirmed it on Twitter.

Honestly, I am surprised they released a data refresh right before Christmas. Last year Google promised they would not update the Panda algorithm or do data refreshes until after the holidays – this year, I guess they decided not to wait.

Google Panda algorithm on Wednesday, November 21st

Confirmed: Google Panda Refresh #22 On November 21st; 0.8% Of Queries Impacted                        

Google has confirmed that they ran a refresh to the Google Panda algorithm on Wednesday, November 21st.

On November 20th, we asked Google about a Panda refresh – since we were fairly confident there was some sort of update. Google told us there was no update but an update would be coming within 7 to 10 days. The update came a day later, not several days later.

This would make this the 22nd Panda refresh we’ve tracked. The 21st Panda refresh was on November 5th and impacted about 1.1% of English queries. This update, Google told us 0.8% of English queries were affected to a degree that a regular user might notice.

Google’s confirmed to us that a Panda Update happened yesterday.Google said that worldwide, the update will impact about 0.4% of queries that a regular user might notice. A Google Ranking Shuffle On August 16th?

There are many signals in the webmaster forums that show that there was a possible significant Google ranking shuffle yesterday morning and throughout yesterday. I suspect as webmasters wake up and look at their analytics it will help confirm or deny this. 

There is some chatter going on at WebmasterWorld thread and then dozens and dozens of complaints in the Google Webmaster Help forums. Much more than what you'd see on a typical day.

Now, this might be Google testing a new algorithm, or testing an update to an algorithm. Or it might be a large number of individual sites received manual penalties. It can also be a bug with Google or even nothing at all. Time will tell.

I am eager to see the Mozcast report for Thursday update later today. SERP Metrics doesn't show any major shifts from the norm.

I am seeing reports in the various forums, including DigitalPoint Forums and WebmasterWorld that Google has updated their toolbar PageRank values for many many sites.

The last update we had to the Google Toolbar PageRank was in May 2012, about three months ago, which is typically how often Google will push out a toolbar PageRank update to the public.

I am very happy to see that I don't see as much concern and buzz about this in the forums. Maybe it too recently happened and SEOs in the forums still have not woken up and they will explode in fear and joy about the PageRank update or maybe SEOs have wised up.

I just checked this site and we continue our decline from once a PageRank 7 and now down to a PageRank of 3. Why? More on that over here.

That being said, I do hope your PageRank climbed and did not fall. It is a good ego boost when you reach a PR7 or higher.
